Alternatives to John Pye

The Auctions which seem to be recommended the most so far are:

http://www.simoncharles-auctioneers.co.uk/

http://www.peacockauction.co.uk/

http://www.shepherdsauctions.co.uk/Content/default.asp

It appears from your emails that  all these auctioneers operate straightforward, honest auctions,  with competive charges and generally much lower prices than John Pye- Give them a look.

Well I suppose the moral of the story is -
Do not even think about complaining to John Pye & Sons.
Not only will you:
1) Get no assistance
2) Have your account closed
3) Generally be treated in an un professional manner
 John Pye will then
4)Attempt to censor your blog seeking removal of any comments they don't like

This of course does nothing but confirm the type of people John Pye are and is yet another reason  for  John Pye Don't buy.

I am working on the letter mentioned in yesterdays blog. Those who have already emailed me  please be assured I will respect (a word not in John Pyes vocabulary) your anonymity if requested and certainly wont send anything without showing you first.

UK RETAILERS WHO USE JOHN PYE

I  had not intended to update the John Pye blog today but following John Pyes attempts at Internet Censorship by temporarily removing a number of posts in this blog heres a quick update.
I am preparing a letter to the major UK retailers who use John Pye highlighting some of the many issues that arise with John Pye- Added to the list will now be John Pyes attack on the freedom of the internet.

I would be grateful to receive (by email) readers thoughts on what should be included in this initial letter together with actual experiences I can use. I really am pushed for time today but will get the draft letter up on this blog hopefully over the weekend

Many thanks.

I bought 15 lots of electrical items from this auctioneer on January 3rd this year.
Of these items,13 did not work and were entirely useless.
They should have been listed as for spares or repair but the catalog gave the impression that the goods were of merchandable quality.
John Pye rely on their terms and conditions which state all goods are sold as seen.
This auction house should be avoided.

I bought quite a few lots from them some in sealed boxes and some not, you expect that some items may not be up to standard however out of the 15 items we bought for almost £500 none of the items worked what so ever. I would never recommend anyone to spend their money with this company

I've bought electrical goods from them and on both occasions they were faulty. It's sold as seen so no refunds. They regularly sell the same stock in auctions and I assume the goods all share the same faults. I can speculate they have job lots of these goods but filter it into auctions. Do you want to deal with this kind of company?

Brought from them on line auction in January and spent over £1000, half of the stuff had parts missing and was useless ( 2x 4ft table football both had parts missing couldn't even make one complete table, 6ft pool table that had parts of the leg system and fixtures missing, full size folding table tennis table that had parts , fixtures and nuts and bolts missing so it could not be set up,, They were class as retail return but did not state parts were missing. Don't buy from them unless item is new in seal box. I rang and complained regarding items were missing, making the item useless as it can not be assemble together, all I was told, it was sold as seen. With them charging 15% seller's fees and 20% vat on top of final sale price, you would think they would have a duty to list the item properly, they know if they did that, no one would buy the rubbish, that's why they don't list the item properly. They are rip off merchants, don't buy from them, otherwise you just be kicking yourself. Hope this will someone being rip off again, Bruce Chan

  • I wouldn't buy there again, all the stuff had things missing and was useless. I brought over a £1000 of stuff of which over £500 was useless due to missing bits or parts, If items are in seal box they will be ok, but item marked as "retail return sold as seen" stay well clear. NEVER AGAIN, IF YOU THINK EBAYS BAD, THESE GUYS TAKE THE BISCUIT. With seller commision and VAT to add on is not worth it. They are knowingly selling items thats not in working order and said they can't inspect every item, but they sold have a duty to make sure that the item is in a working condition, as they are charging seller fees. Be warn, THEY ARE BAD NEWS.

    John Pye & Sons: Nottingham

    Looking forward to todays catalogues!

Remember John Pye Dont Buy Auctions are not an internet auction in the true sense.

Whilst one of John Pye auctions is internet bidding only you do have a brief chance to inspect the goods -  this removes any responsibilties John Pye Nottingham have under distance selling regulations.

Dont forget that with Commissions and VAT the John Pye hammer price increases by close to 50%

    John Pye Auctions Nottingham

I  did have a look at yesterdays "John Pye Don't Buy" post -
I must stress I haven't turned into a John Pye fan.
I could never be a fan of an auction house where old goods are hidden in new boxes.
Where customer service is limited to closing your account.
Where you as a buyer get no protection for the 20% buyers premium.
Where goods regularly sell for more than they are available for from sellers to whom you have some recourse and from whom you get some protection.

    More Don't Buy John Pye

Well after looking at John Pye's sale yesterday I have to admit a sneaking regard for John Pye Don't Buy.

If I was a seller of goods there would be a strong case for using John Pye - They seem to obtain prices higher than any other auction house despite the widespread bad publicity they receive, despite their total lack of customer service and despite their unethical approach. Of course I am not a seller I am a buyer and as a buyer they are undoubtedly the least attractive auction house. So if you are selling use John Pye if you are buying definitely "don't buy from John Pye"

John Pye - No protection No Customer service

Well just looking at the current prices on John Pye Don't Buy Auction today...Quite a few of these prices after John Pyes commissions, VAT etc are added are very close to those available at Ebay and Amazon - I urge you to check these sites before you buy from John Pye- Ebay and Amazon both offer high levels of Customer protection and service JOHN PYE DON'T.

Apparently you can tell when you could have got the goods cheaper from a respected source- THE AUCTIONEERS LAUGH!!!

Please also remember to thoroughly unpack and check the entire contents of any boxes you intend to bid on - A new sealed box at John Pye can still have old broken goods in it- oh yes

John Pye Don't Buy 16th April

Just scanned the Catalogue for 16th April-You are probably safe on goods from Dion being genuine returns who would have bought brand Dion to start with? You are probably for similar reasons safe with Gear 4 lots - thereafter be careful REMEMBER JOHN PYE AUCTIONS CAN INCLUDE TOTALLY KNACKERED OLD GOODS IN BRAND NEW PACKAGING- JOHN PYE HAVE ZERO CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WILL JUST CLOSE YOUR ACCOUNT IF YOU COMPLAIN -YES THEY REALLY ARE THAT ARROGANT!

Next Unethical John Pye Sale starts soon

Well its Friday and Nottingham is busy with John Pye customers frantically stuffing brand  new boxes with old, broken, worn out or even dangerous goods - Yes the John Pye Dont Buy catalogue will be on line later today - So if you have money to waste not long to wait................

    John Pye Dont Buy Update

Well the John Pye Dont Buy practice of selling old goods in Brand New Packaging is I am advised not in isolation illegal. If for instance John Pye themselves re packaged the goods it might be, If John Pye could be proved to know that it was being done again they would be on thin ice. So whilst their business maybe unethical it would be very difficult to prove it to be  illegal.
The ex John Pye employee who hinted he had some interesting info has not got back to me, if they are reading this please contact me.

    JOHN PYE DON'T BUY

I was explaining to some friends yesterday the John Pye "switch" -

    1) Take brand new goods  out of their packaging
    2) Replace with old goods in the new packaging, reseal
    3) Mix "switched" goods in with some genuine retail returns and get selling!!!

John Pye Don't Buys next on line Auction is now on their website - please be very careful- its not just my experience but many others - treat everything in this auction with caution

DO NOT BE FOOLED BY NEW, SEALED BOXES - You are really in a Lucky Dip  in fact think of it as a fairground lucky dip- You know you will never win in the long run.

    JOHN PYE DONT BUY

Brand New Box +New Leads+New Packaging+ Totally worn out broken Projector.
    1) Why would an old broken item be packaged in new packaging with new accessories unless it was to deceive?
    2) Why would such an item be mixed in with genuine “retail returns unless it was to deceive?
    3) Do John Pye condone this deception by the sellers they represent?
    4) Do John Pye actually collude with this deception by deliberately mixing in such items with genuine retail returns?
5 )Should  John Pye in the event of any complaint automatically default to The Sale of Goods Act?
6 )What protection do John Pye offer to buyers  in return for the considerable buyers fees they charge?
    7) Should major retailers who use John Pye continue to support them and risk their own reputations by their involvement in an Auction Scam?

    "JOHN PYE DONT BUY"

Old broken goods brand new box- Beware if you are bidding with John Pye (Dont buy)
The photo above from their catalogue is of course of a brand new box (also containing new leads remote etc but a totally shot projector- this of course was not a "retail return" but a cynical unethical ruse of selling complete rubbish but in new boxes - this is not illegal and the only response from John Pye will be to "close your account" - So if you are thinking of buying from "john pye dont buy" be careful in fact I suggest you dont - you are safer on ebay or amazon or any on line shop and very often cheaper.
REMEMBER IN ADDITION TO DISCOVERING OLD GOODS MASQUERADING  AS NEW YOU FACE A TOTAL OF NEARLY 45% FEES ETC ONTOP OF THE HAMMER PRICE

James Fuller- Thompson School of Business
In the 1970s Customer Service was mighty thin, complaints were not dealt with and Jamesft  of John Pye (jamesft@johnpye.co.uk) whose response to a complaint is “your account is closed” go away, would have been very much at home. There were of course exceptions - Marks & Spencer I clearly recall being one, I still use them today primarily because of their ability to deal with Customers in a fair and even handed manner
I suspect that jamesft@johnpye.co.uk is a child of the 70s yearning to revisit the times when Customers didn’t matter, sharp practice was applauded ,indeed rewarded-  a sort of business bully boy. This would appear to be the style of management encouraged by John Pye I guess they have got away with it for so long they probably believe it’s an admirable management style. For the  next few weeks I intend to highlight standards of Customer Service I encounter it will be interesting to see how many fall into the Marks and Spencer basket and how many in the John Pye basket.

John Pye and (UN) ethical selling
Is it unethical for an auction house to withhold the fact that it knows items it is selling are broken?
Is it unethical for an auction house to sell items as retail returns when they are not?
Is it unethical for the auction house to then rely on the sale of goods act?
These are amongst the questions you are asking me.
I have also been contacted by a Solicitor who has a surprising opinion which might be very good news for the many disgruntled John Pye clients out there.
Keep an eye on the blog I want to speak to this Solicitor again and to an ex John Pye employee before updating further
